Greenberg Traurig Takes New Approach to On-Campus Interview, Associate Training Processes

MIAMI, FL -- October 26, 2004 -- The international law firm Greenberg Traurig LLP has taken a new approach to recruitment and training of young lawyers in 2004. The firm deepened its on-campus recruiting activities and summer associates’ programs to reflect the firm’s business-focused approach to the practice of law.

Carol Allen, Greenberg Traurig’s Chief Recruitment Officer, said, “We are looking for exceptionally bright students with a unique set of skills. In a business-oriented firm, people who tend to do best are those who understand business and understand the law."

Chairs of national practice groups and members of firm management conducted on-campus interviews during visits to 40 universities and job fairs across the country. They structured interviews to learn more about the students’ leadership and business experiences. Candidates received on-the-spot call-back offers for interviews at the firm. Traditionally, students can wait several weeks for call-back offers.

A deepening of the interview process was consistent with the business element of the firm’s Summer Associate program. The firm’s 2004 summer associate class participated in the inaugural Summer Associates Business Challenge, a contest loosely based on “The Apprentice.” Teams were asked to develop solutions and provide recommendations to training, mentoring and business-development challenges faced by law firms. This enabled summer associates to stand in the shoes of the firm’s leaders and learn about the business of running a law firm.

“The Summer Associates Business Challenge enabled law students to sharpen their business skills in the early stage of their career. These skills will make them more effective lawyers,” Allen said.

Summer associates used a variety of tools to present their recommendations, including video production, role-playing and recreation of Greek mythology. The summer associates all gathered in New York to present their ideas to an audience of 100 shareholders, associates and summer associates. Many of the recommendations are being considered for implementation.
