Greenberg Traurig Salutes Equal Justice Works Fellows

Law Firm Hosts Reception to Honor Past and Current Fellows Who Provide Legal Representation to Under-Served Communities

NEW YORK, NY -- October 4, 2005 -- The international law firm Greenberg Traurig LLP hosted a reception on September 28th to salute the hard work and dedication of the Equal Justice Works Fellows, who provide legal services to those in need. The event, held at the law firm’s offices in the MetLife building, welcomed a new class of Fellows to New York and invited past fellows to reconnect with former colleagues. Greenberg Traurig is a major sponsor of the Equal Justice Works (formerly NAPIL) Fellowships Program and has sponsored 63 fellows since 2000.

Equal Justice Works is an organization that addresses the shortage of attorneys working on behalf of traditionally under-served populations and causes in the United States and its territories. The Greenberg sponsorship helps to provide salary and generous loan repayment assistance; a national training and leadership development program; and other forms of support during the term of the fellowship, so that bright, young attorneys can practice public interest law.

Through its Leadership Development Initiative, Equal Justice Works also aims to keep its past and present fellows connected and exchanging information and ideas through ongoing workshops, seminars and receptions.

Current and recent past Equal Justice Works Fellows whom Greenberg has sponsored include:

  • Michael Haber (2005 Fellow) - Brooklyn Legal Services Corporation, Brooklyn, NY
    Primary Issue: Community Economic Development.
  • Carrie Miller (2004 Fellow) - South Brooklyn Legal Services, Brooklyn, NY
    Primary Issue: Domestic Violence.
  • Sonia Mansoor (2003 Fellow) - Sanctuary for Families, New York, NY
    Primary Issue: Domestic Violence.

“Equal Justice Works is one of the most important community outreach programs that the firm supports” said Stephen Saxl, Greenberg’s Pro Bono Director and a Shareholder in the New York office. “We are proud to sponsor the work of these sharp, young attorneys who want to donate their time to public service at the outset of their careers.”

Holly R. Skolnick, a Greenberg litigation shareholder, and the President and Founder of the Greenberg Traurig Fellowship Foundation also commented that “the program had helped to deliver critically needed legal services at 43 non-profit host organizations, across 17 issue areas ranging from community development and disability rights to domestic violence and immigration. Together, the sponsors, Fellows and host organizations ensure equal access to the justice system for society's most vulnerable individuals and communities.”
