The seminar, “How to be a Responsible Nonprofit Director:
Do’s and Don’ts – Avoiding Punishment for Good Deeds,” will
be held on Thursday, May 18th from 7:30 a.m. to 9 a.m. at the offices
of Greenberg Traurig, LLP, 2375 E. Camelback Road, Suite 700 in
Phoenix. There is no charge to attend and a complimentary continental
breakfast will be provided.
Harry J. Friedman,
a shareholder at Greenberg Traurig, will present on the following
topics:
- Principles guiding nonprofit governance
- Heightened scrutiny of nonprofit governance by the media,
IRS and Congress
- Nonprofit directors’ responsibilities and exposure to liability
- When good deeds have bad consequences
- Governance that benefits nonprofits and strengthens their
effectiveness
Mr. Friedman provides advice and counseling to numerous nonprofit
organizations and has authored several articles including “No Good
Deed Goes Unpunished: A Primer on Excise Tax Penalties on Foundations
and Charitable Trusts.”
“The Media and Congress have recently documented a number of
cases of governance problems with charities,” states Friedman. “The
absence of nonprofit oversight, and a failure of board members to
recognize the level of responsibility they have, has fueled these
problems. The public expects directors of nonprofits to act as responsible
stewards, and this requires that directors have knowledge of, and
commitment to, the duties they are expected to carry out.”
