Serving eight years (1997-2005) as a Democratic Congressman representing
Texas District 1, Sandlin, whose leadership and analytic skills were recognized
from the outset, was selected for House leadership, serving as Minority
Chief Deputy Whip and as a member of the Democratic Steering and Policy
Committee. He also was selected to be a member of the powerful Ways and
Means Committee, and served on the Financial Services Committee and the
Transportation and Infrastructure Committee.
"I am very pleased to join Greenberg Traurig and to help the firm continue
to grow its governmental affairs practice. Its litigation practice also
enjoys an excellent reputation worldwide," said Sandlin. "I expect the firm’s
locations, industry expertise, and client services will prove a perfect
fit for my strengths."
“We are very excited to welcome Max to the firm. Not only was he a well-known
Member--he was hugely well-respected throughout Texas and on Capitol Hill.
He will be a tremendous asset to all of our clients, here, in Texas, and
throughout the firm,” said Joe Reeder, the Managing Shareholder of the Mid-Atlantic
Region. “He is an eloquent, first rate lawyer, and his legislative prowess
is legend. He also is about the nicest guy you'd ever want to meet.”
Prior to his service in Congress, Sandlin practiced law in Texas and
was active in the banking and energy industries, two growing industry areas
for Greenberg Traurig’s Texas offices. He started his political career as
an elected county judge of Harrison County, Texas in 1986. In 1989, Sandlin
was elected Judge of the County Court at Law in Harrison County, Texas --
serving until his election to Congress in 1996.
Sandlin received his BA and JD degrees from Baylor University, where
he was on the National Championship Mock Trial Team and later named Outstanding
Young Alumnus.
Sandlin’s arrival to the firm comes on the heels of Greenberg Traurig's
recent opening of its Houston office. With its already well-established
Dallas office, Greenberg Traurig now exceeds 1500 attorneys worldwide.
