Immigration in Congress

April 5, 2006

Another snag in Immigration Reform?

As GT attorneys continue to assist in drafting a workable comprehensive immigration reform bill, the situation continues to change. Political manuveurs have come into play and are complicating the debate even further. Senator Reid motioned for cloture yesterday. What this means is that a Senate vote has to occur within one hour from the the start of business tomorrow morning.

The White House is weighing in and continues to push for a comprehensive piece of legislation that includes a guest worker program. See attached Statement of Administration Policy more details on the White House's position.

Finally, Senators Martinez, Hagel and others are offering a "fallback" compromise. Given the fact that we may fall short of getting the support we need for the Committee Product, this is the next best, albeit not perfect, option. We have attached an EWIC press release that discusses this compromise. Negotiations and compromise are very fluid and are changing constantly. Please visit GT's Congressional site for updates.
