State Department Update on Processing Times for Revalidation of Visas

The State Department’s Visa office has been suffering under a backlog of visa revalidation requests since mid-fall 2001. This backlog resulted in processing times being pushed back to 10 to 12 weeks from the date of filing for the revalidation of a visa. However, the Visa Office has been making a concerted effort to reduce this backlog and the State Department is reporting they hope to have requests received in December 2001 processed by the end of February 2002. In addition, the State Department is having employees work overtime and adding additional staff in order to complete cases filed in January as quickly possible. The American Immigration Lawyers Association reports that the Visa Office hopes these efforts will allow them to have processing times back down to less than four weeks from the date of filing for visa revalidations filed after mid-March.
