IRS to Crack Down on Social Security Number Violations on W-2 Forms

It has come to our attention that the Internal Revenue Service is working on a proposal that would fine employers that file W-2 wage and tax statements with incorrect and mismatched social security numbers. An unidentified source indicated that the fine for each incorrect social security number would be $50.00.

Mismatched social security numbers are a great source of incorrect wage information. This policy may go into effect in June 2004 for W-2s issued for tax years starting in 2002.

We will update this posting as we receive additional information.
