Immigration and Naturalization Service Extended the Enrollment Period for SENTRI From a One Year to a Two Year Period

On its last day as a government agency (February 28, 2003), the Immigration and Naturalization Service extended the enrollment period for SENTRI (Secure Electronic network for Travelers Rapid Inspection) for participants from a one year period to a two year period. Of course, throughout the two year period, regular law enforcement queries on SENTRI participants will continue. The extension became effective on February 28, 2003, and continues under the new Department of Homeland Security.

SENTRI is an automated system that enables enrolled motorists at selected land border ports to complete the inspections process and enter the United States in a more expeditious manner using dedicated commuter lanes. As part of the enrollment process, SENTRI participants undergo an extensive preliminary screening that includes law enforcement and criminal background checks. This change will benefit thousands of dedicated commuter lane users along the U.S.-Mexico border.
