Update on Pending Immigration Reform Bill
On June 1, 2007, the White House released the
attached fact sheet
regarding various aspects of the pending immigration reform bill. Among
other things, the attached document states that the current version of
the proposed legislation would eliminate the ability of U.S. citizens to
sponsor their foreign born siblings for permanent residency and would
put a numerical limit on the number of green cards granted to parents of
U.S. citizens. However, the pending legislation does have a proposal for
a new parents' visitor visa to allow parents to visit their adult
children in the U.S. for extended periods. The White House states that
the goal of the pending legislation is to balance family connections
with U.S. economic needs. Greenburg Traurig is intimately involved in
the negotiations of the pending immigration reform bill and will post
more updates as they become available.
