The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has indicated to the
American Immigration Lawyers Association that the publication of a new
Form I-9 and an accompanying employer handbook will occur as early as
next week. DHS has been working on revising the I-9 form and its
corresponding employer handbook for some time, but it has recently
decided to move forward with a version predicated on the changes
promulgated in the 1997/98 regulations.
Previously it had been anticipated that a new Form I-9 and employer
handbook would follow the publication of a new, final I-9 regulation.
However, based on this updated information, it appears that DHS will now
implement a new I-9 Form in the short term and push off further
regulatory action in this area until 2008.
