The Governor of Rhode Island Imposes New Employment Verification Requirements for State Contractors

Rhode Island is the latest state to join the E-Verify bandwagon. On March 27, 2008, Rhode Island's Governor issued an executive order that will require any person, business, contractor, or subcontractor doing business with the State of Rhode Island to use the federal E-Verify program to confirm the employment authorization of all new hires.

The legislation also mandates most Rhode Island state agencies in the Executive Branch to use E-Verify to verify the employment authorization of all new hires. Interestingly the Governor’s Executive Order did not contain an effective date.
GT will continue to provide updates for our clients on the implementation of this Executive Order in the state of Rhode Island.
