Extension of Grant of Deferred Enforced Departure for Liberians

President Barack Obama announced an extension of Deferred Enforced Departure (DED) for Liberians. The grant of DED, originally issued by President George W. Bush in 2007, was set to expire on March 31, 2009. President Obama extended the grant of DED and employment authorization until March 31, 2010. In response to President Obama’s announcement, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) automatically extended employment authorization for Liberian nationals covered under DED until September 30, 2009. USCIS will also publish a notice in the Federal Register explaining how individuals can apply to obtain employment authorization through March 31, 2010. This extension applies only to Liberians who are presently residing in the United States pursuant to the existing grant of DED, except for those individuals who are statutorily ineligible for Temporary Protected Status or who are removable for other reasons.
