ICE Audit Results in Terminations at Washington State Fruit Company
Gebber
Farms, a Washington State fruit
company, was forced to lay off hundreds
of employees after being selected for an
worksite audit by Immigration and
Customs Enforcement (ICE). ICE announced
during November 2009 that it had
selected 1,000 employers nationwide who
would be required to undergo an
administrative audit of their I-9 employment eligibility verification
forms. The employers for
this group of audits were
selected by ICE based on leads, national
security concerns and public safety concerns.
Neither
Gebber Farms nor
ICE would comment on the number
of employees terminated, but reports
state that anywhere from several hundred
to 800 Gebber Farms employees were laid
off
following the audit.
