ICE Audit Results in Terminations at Washington State Fruit Company

Gebber Farms, a Washington State fruit company, was forced to lay off hundreds of employees after being selected for an worksite audit by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). ICE announced during November 2009 that it had selected 1,000 employers nationwide who would be required to undergo an administrative audit of their  I-9 employment eligibility verification forms. The employers for this group of audits were selected by ICE based on leads, national security concerns and public safety concerns.
 
Neither Gebber Farms nor ICE would comment on the number of employees terminated, but reports state that anywhere from several hundred to 800 Gebber Farms employees were laid off following the audit.
