New Law Invalidates Puerto Rican Birth Certificates as of July 1, 2010

In order to combat the fraudulent use of Puerto Rican birth certificates, the government of Puerto Rico passed a law regarding the validity of its birth certificates.  On July 1, 2010, the Puerto Rico Health Department's Vital Statistics Record Office will begin issuing new birth certificates that incorporate technology to limit vulnerability to forgery.  As such, employers should be aware that as of July 1, 2010, birth certificates issued before July 1, 2010 are invalid for I-9 purposes.
