DHS Secretary remarks on Comprehensive Immigration Reform

On June 24, 2010, Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Janet Napolitano spoke about Comprehensive Immigration Reform (CIR) in Denver, Colorado at the National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials (NALEO) Conference, the largest non-partisan gathering of Latino leaders in the U.S.

According to the DHS press release, Secretary Napolitano emphasized the Obama Administration’s recognition of the need for CIR and characterized measures it has already taken as serving to lay the foundation for it.  Such measures, according to Secretary Napolitano, have included the launching of a more user-friendly website by United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), the elimination of the backlog for citizenship-related background checks, and efforts by U.S. Immigrations and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to identify and remove undocumented immigrants convicted of crimes and to reform the detention system.
