e-Passport Testing Completed in Anticipation of October 26th Deadline

As reported in January, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) started testing e-Passport technology. e-Passports, which contain contactless chips with biographic and biometric information and readers that are capable of reading e-Passports, was tested from January 15, 2006 through April 15, 2006. The DHS has reported considerable progress in this testing, which is in anticipation of the upcoming October 26, 2006 deadline which requires all Visa Waiver Travelers to have an e-Passport to travel to the United States.
